Japanese Culture: “Nanakusagayu”

Nanakusagayu is a dish eaten on the morning of January 7, or “jinjitsu”, a seasonal holiday dedicated to health for the new year.

It is a kind of rice porridge that contains seven kinds of spring wildflowers (nanakusa).

It is eaten in the hope of being free from illness and disaster, and in the hope of longevity. There could also be some meaning about resting the stomach that is tired after the New Year’s feast.

Nanakusa will be sold at supermarkets as January 7 approaches.
