What is “oshougatsu” (Japanese New Year)

“Oshougatsu”, or Japanese New Year, is an important annual event for Japanese people.
January 1st – 3rd is known as “sanganichi” (The first three days), and the first week of the year is known as “Matsunouchi”, and is a period of festivities.

On New Year’s it is common to eat the varied festive dish known as “osechi”, and to visit shrines.
There are also many other New Year’s events held in the wish for health and happiness in the coming year.
